Prince Albert was founded in 1762 on a farm called Queekvalleij. Originally known as Albertsburg. When it obtained municipal status in 1845 it was renamed Prince Albert in honour of Queen Victoria's consort as Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Prince Albert was historically part of the Cape Colony.
Prince Albert district has a rich heritage of Later Stone Age (LSA) sites, stone tools and rock paintings. Many of which date back 25000 years. Boomplaas Cave on the Swartberg Pass provides evidence of the middle stone age people.
Something interesting: The name Karoo is derived from a Khoikhoi word Karusa meaning "dry arid place".

It was quite interesting to be driving through the town, observing the old structures, and learning about its history. We were just reminded of the church's past by the old tombs there. We also saw the stunning location of the Arniston Hotel, the Arniston Harbour which was established in 1936 and of course the beautiful Waenhuiskrans Nature Reserve. Barrydale, Western Cape South Africa

Barrydale is a village located on the border of the Overberg and Klein Karoo regions of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Named after Joseph Barry, a well known merchant of the 19th century it is situated at the northern end of the Tradouw's pass which winds its way through the mountains to Swellendam. Barrydale's history dates back to the early 18th century when farmers moved into the area looking for fertile arable land with water. The community built their church on a spot where the R62 and R324 roads meet. In the days before the church was built there were a number of nagmaal houses (houses where Holy Communion could be celebrated) and a school, but not much else. The Dutch Reformed Community of Barrydale came into being in 1878 when land was purchased to build the church.

The Uniondale Church and the old British Fort

The small town of Uniondale in the Little Karoo was formed in 1856. The church in this beautiful town was built in 1886 and overlooks the entire town. When you stand in front of this church you can feel the sense of grandeur with its sandstone structure. What an architectural masterpiece! From the church, we went looking for the British fort on the outskirts of town. It was amazing to see this structure, still standing today and to just imagine what happened there over 100 years ago.

George, Garden Route - South Africa Tourism

The Garden Route is a popular and scenic stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley; with George, the Garden Route's largest city and main administrative centre.

KNYSNA ELEPHANT PARK

KNYSNA ELEPHANT PARK

The Knysna Elephant Park (est. 1994) was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. Over the last twenty years, the park has cared for and raised more than forty elephants. These animals include relocated animals, orphaned calves, elephants rescued from culls and ex-circus animals. Some have become part of the resident herd, others have moved onto other reserves and facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, depending on their personalities, bonds with other animals and welfare needs.

Cape 2 Rio yacht race starts

Cape 2 Rio yacht race starts

Thirty-six yachts cast off from Cape Town on January 4 2014 for the Cape 2 Rio yacht race with crews from all over the world. A variety of yachts will be flying the flags of eight different countries including newcomer Angola. The first Cape to Rio race was inspired by Bruce Dalling's victory in the 1968 Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, and was held in 1971 to Rio de Janeiro. Subsequent races were called the South Atlantic race as they went to Uruguay rather than Brazil. The 13th edition was back to the original course, Cape to Rio, in 2011 and in 2014 the race was renamed Cape2Rio.
